TAM Explorer
A reference guide to navigating the tool and understanding what each view shows.
What this tool does
The TAM Explorer lets you browse every hospital campus, university, and K–12 school district in FirstLight Fiber's footprint and see how close each one is to existing FLF infrastructure, how competitive the broadband market is at that location, and whether the site already has FLF connectivity.
Three views
The tool has three tabs across the top. Each serves a different purpose.
🗺️
Map
Browse sites geographically. Filter by distance to fiber, competition level, and connectivity status. Click any site to see details.
📊
Analytics
Review aggregate counts across all three sectors. Filter and compare serviceability against competition.
🔵
Clusters
View geographic clusters - groups of hospitals, universities, and schools in close proximity to one another.
Map tab
The map tab opens on Universities by default. Switch to Hospitals or K–12 using the sub-tabs above the map. The left sidebar contains filters and a detail panel; the right side is the interactive map.
Distance to fiber
Limits the list to sites within a given distance of FLF infrastructure.
Competition
Filters by competitive intensity - High, Medium, Low, or None - based on FCC broadband data.
Hide already-connected
Removes sites that already have FLF connectivity from the list and map.
Search
Type any campus, hospital, or district name to jump to it on the map. Use the arrow buttons to cycle through results.
Show FLF fiber
Toggles FLF fiber routes on the map.
Show on-net buildings
Highlights buildings predicted to be on the FLF network (green dots).
Detailed map
Toggle in the top-right corner of the map. Switches to OpenStreetMap for street-level context.
Note: Click any dot or building on the map to populate the detail panel on the left with that site's connectivity status, enrollment or bed count, ownership, and FCC-reported broadband providers.
Analytics tab
Divided into three side-by-side cards - Universities, K–12 Schools, and Hospitals - each with the same layout.
Filters
Each card has its own serviceability, competition, and size filters (enrollment or beds). Changing a filter updates both the count and the chart.
Count label
Shows how many sites match the current filters - e.g., "47 campuses match."
Penetration stats
Shows TAM (all sites in footprint), how many are already connected, SAM (sites within 1 mile of fiber), and penetration rates with a state-by-state breakdown.
Chart
A stacked bar chart of serviceability levels, colored by competition intensity. Hover any bar to see exact counts.
Table
A sortable list of all matching sites with their key metrics.
Clusters tab
A cluster is a group of two or more institutions (hospitals, universities, and/or K–12 schools) in close physical proximity. Each cluster is shown as a shaded polygon on the map.
Cluster colors
Clusters are shaded by their best competition level: green = None, light green = Low, orange-red = Medium, dark red = High.
Filters
Filter by sector composition, competition level, serviceability, minimum number of institutions, and state.
Cluster detail
Select a cluster from the dropdown or click it on the map to see a summary: institution count by type, best serviceability, and competition breakdown.
Key terms
Serviceability
Distance from the site to the nearest FLF fiber endpoint.

>2 mi
Competition
Competitive intensity at the site based on FCC broadband provider data.

TAM vs. SAM
- TAM - Total addressable market. All institutions in FLF's footprint, regardless of distance to fiber.
- SAM - Serviceable addressable market. The subset within 1 mile of existing FLF fiber.
Connected vs. penetrated
- Connected to FLF - A fiber endpoint is on or within ~50 meters of the campus.
- Penetrated - A broader signal used in the analytics tab: any confirmed or predicted FLF presence at the site.
Quick start
- 1Open the Map tab and select a sector: Universities, Hospitals, or K–12.
- 2Check "Hide already-connected" to remove sites with existing FLF connectivity.
- 3Set Competition to None and Low to filter to sites with little or no competition.
- 4Drag the Distance to fiber slider to 1 mile or less to focus on sites closest to existing infrastructure.
- 5Enable "Show FLF fiber" to see how close the fiber runs to each site.
- 6Click any dot on the map to view that site's full detail - beds or enrollment, ownership, and existing providers.
- 7Switch to the Analytics tab to see aggregate counts for the filtered set.
